Walter, again, it doesn't matter what some people do or don't do, it's the sheer gigantic volume of pirated files that has promoted the MP3 format. It doesn't even matter what MP3.COM says about formats, because they will move to whatever - is the ubiquitous format.
It's ubiquity that matters. Period.
I think the majority of folks on SI with issues about these matters don't understand the moment at which we stand. A flood gate has been opened and is rushing through of stupendous proportions. MP3.COM is just a couple of ordinary businessmen who were clever enough to try and put a pipe on this floodgate.
That's all they are and that's all they have, but take a look at the other portals. MP3.COM has at least a business, a pre-packaged assumed possiblity of a sell with every visit.
Do any of you guys even listen to MP3's? How can you see the potential if you have never even dipped your toe into this flood?
Again, it's ubiquity of format that matters, not what MS or Sony or WB thinks they can pull off. Ubiquity... not quality, not security, not artist-approved, but ubiquity.
