[WSTL, BBTK & Others Licence ATM Chip]
Monday March 10 8:09 AM EDT Leading Communications Vendors License First ATM-on-a-Chip Solution for DSL Networks
Major Step Towards Low Cost, Value-Added DSL Service Offerings From Carriers
SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 1997--Advanced Telecommunications Modules Ltd. today announced that six leading communications equipment vendors have licensed the company's ATM-on-a-chip solution to develop next generation Internet access equipment for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) networks.
By incorporating this core ATM technology into their end-point devices, these products will enable carriers to provide for the first time low-cost ATM/DSL networks and a range of value-added services such as transparent local area network (LAN) services and high-speed Internet connections for business and home users. In addition, the technology will stimulate applications like e-commerce, distance learning and remote management and monitoring that everyone's been predicting for a long time. "The combination of ATM and the ATOM Accelerator gives carriers the capabilities they need for delivering new multi-service networks at a low cost. ATM with DSL provides carriers with full service networking of data, voice and video plus the performance, scalability and tariffing capability that they need to provide new value-added services," said Tom Cooper, vice president of business development for ATM Ltd. "The ATOM Accelerator allows vendors to focus on developing their products and driving their product costs into the ground instead of building network systems architectures."
ATM Ltd.'s ATOM Accelerator, the industry's first integrated, ATM ASIC and software development kit, is being licensed by Westell Technologies Inc. for Digital Subscriber Loop Access Multiplexers (DSLAM) modems and NICs; Next Level Communications for Fiber-To-The-Curb (FTTC) and xDSL stand-alone devices ("sets") and NICs; BroadBand Technologies Inc. and Standard Microsystems Corporation (SMC) for modems and other devices. Com21 has licensed the technology for high speed cable head ends and Sphere Communications Inc. for computer telephony equipment. With the ATOM Accelerator, these companies will be able to accelerate their development programs and get new products to market faster, while bringing down the cost of xDSL modems, network termination devices and NICs.
"ATM Ltd.'s exciting new devices will help Westell meet customer expectations quicker and allow for attractive pricing in volume deployment of xDSL technology," said Bill Rodey, Westell's vice president of strategic planning and global partnering.
Next Level's Bob Bortolotto, director of ATM Systems commented on the company's licensing deal with ATM Ltd., "The ATOM solution that we have licensed from ATM Ltd. has enabled us to quickly develop a family of home products for high-speed data services serving both FTTC and xDSL access technologies."
Ken Brinkerhoff, divisional vice president of engineering at SMC said, "The ATOM Accelerator technology will bring SMC into the xDSL market much earlier. The resulting low cost, highly flexible solution is very important in this formative stage of the xDSL market."
"ATM Limited was our first choice for ATM25 when we began the development of Spherical," said Ernst Riemann, vice president of Sphere Communications Inc. in Lake Bluff, Illinois. "The complete hardware and software solution offered by the ATOM family allows us to focus on our ATM based computer telephony applications without the need to re-invent ATM technology. Our product's success is based on the QoS offered by ATM25 in the local area network. The Hydrogen ASIC allows Sphere to deliver the powerful, low cost solution that our customers demand."
"Our customers asked us for a product that would incorporate an Ethernet interface into our ATM-based, FLX-2500 switched digital broadband platform," said Steve Shmania, product line manager for BroadBand Technologies, Inc. "This enables us to more rapidly develop a product line with a wider variety of drop options to support our FLX deployments now and in the future. Partnering with ATM Limited is the right decision for us, because it empowers a large number of legacy PC users with a best-in-class data solution. We are impressed with ATM Limited's technology and their willingness to work closely with us to satisfy our customer commitments on a timely basis."
