housing starts were down ex-Midwest.
the regional breakdown was Northeast -6.8%, Midwest -14.6%, South -14.5% and West +2%.

There is, however, an argument that can be made that the slowdown in housing starts has more to do with economic strength than weakness. According to the National Association of Homebuilders some of the slowdown is directly attributable to a shortage of skilled labor and some materials, particularly wallboard. They claim some instances of shortages adding as much as 20 days to construction time. Living in Fairfield County I can testify that it is next to impossible to find a contractor. All booked.
