DJ Chiroscience Finds Gene Coding For Bone Density Protein

Dow Jones Newswires

LONDON -- U.K. company Chiroscience Group PLC (U.CCC) Tuesday said its Seattle-based scientists have identified the gene coding of a protein which may control bone density and aid development of osteoporosis drugs.

Chiroscience unveiled the discovery of the bone density gene some months ago, but said Tuesday that its scientists have now narrowed down the characteristics of the DNA samples taken from a group of South Africans who have the gene mutation.

"Over the last six months the scientists in Seattle have worked to fully characterize one gene that contained a single base pair of DNA that had mutated, with the same mutation occurring among all affected patients," the company said.

"This mutation is believed to cause the gene to dysfunction and lead to an inability to correctly regulate bone growth."

The discovery of the bone density gene was first made in a group of South Africans suffering sclerosteosis - a condition which causes bones to continue to gain mass throughout a person's life. This results in extraordinarily thick bones.

The identification of the gene coding which causes the condition provides Chiroscience with a target from which it can potentially develop drugs to mimic the gene's action, thereby creating bone growth
in sufferers of osteoporosis.

The news caused Chiroscience shares to jump 3.5 pence to 250 pence by 1420 GMT.
