That's why I said Home Depot is to a large extent protected from the www threat. People often need things in a hurry, and nobody is going to buy a 4X8 plywood sheet on line. However, not everything fits into this category and for many items the internet is so much more efficient that regular retailers won't be able to compete. Tools are a good example - it's difficult for a single store to stock a really wide range of types and quality, and most ship well. Most of the tools at your local Home Depot are fair quality at best, and try to find a 6-48 tap. HD has great dominance on the streets, but it has no real presence in the shopping mall of the future, on-line. Personally, I think HD should figure out what parts of their business are best suited for on line selling, and make several specialized www sites for these. An example might be something like homedepottools.com or homedepotgarden etc.
I'm very impressed with HD in general. Where I live their prices are almost always higher than Wal Mart for similar items but they still manage to sell a lot of them.
