As a layperson, I don't see how the removal of a partial section of a disc, as done for a herniated disc, has anything to do with spinal fusion surgeries when the discs are usually shot and something needs to replace it for support. I know my doctor had told me about this procedure for removing disc, but not for the cases which need a fusion surgery; he referred to it as a roto-rooter job because they cut a small hole, stick a tube into the bad disc portion, and suck it out. You are home the next day.
