akmike, One more step further in the analogy.

Can you see that if a stadium "installs" faster ushers, the older slower ushers might get pushed to the "edge" (last usher) where volume is lower? Or possibly they get retired and also replaced by faster ushers? Or possibly the system gets redesigned so fewer, but all faster ushers are needed? Does it matter that the slower ushers all originally came from one standard consulting firm, if they aren't also supplying fast ushers?

Can you see that if one stadium does this, the public might want this in all stadiums?

This is what we are talking about with the next generation equipment.
It potentially impacts older routers and switches already deployed.

IMO, the 1000 box estimate for Terabit routers is by people not considering that the whole system might change. We might not be talking about just adding a few fast ushers here.
