You guys gotta read this: NAVAL WAR COLLEGE Y2K PROJECT Even if only to check out the graphics on the first page. The brainstorming scenarios are some of the most terrifying I've seen to date. At first I thought this was a fake site. nwc.navy.mil
The "Most recent Project Summary" summarizes everything. But, definitely check out the graphics on the link above first. nwc.navy.mil
This was interesting:
Scheduled Wall Street Economic Security Workshop (3 May 1999) We will conduct this workshop at the global headquarters of Cantor Fitzgerald (the world's largest broker of U.S. Government securities) atop the World Trade Center in Manhattan to explore the particular subject area of international finance and economic security issues. In effect, we'll game a composite Y2K scenario and, using real-world financial players, see how they'd likely respond to the challenges that ensue. Our current plans involve capturing GroupSystems inputs on the potential price movements of key financial indicators, as well as the different market environments likely to be encountered on Wall Street, London, other large European markets, and Tokyo. In addition to real-world traders, we also expect to involve a number of financially-oriented media representatives, as well as several players from the executive and legislative branches of the US Government. So was this:
The topic for the evening will be "Homeland Defense." 18 May 1999 (6:30 - 8:30pm) Distinguished Guest: Dr. Fred Ikle, former Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. cna.org
Bottom line of Naval War College effort: Understanding that there is a tremendous gap between the public face many corporations and governments put forward on this issue ("we will have it well in hand") and the private fears and concerns expressed by many information technology experts (ranging from "global recession" to "apocalypse 2000!"), we want to explore this topic in as systematic a fashion as possible. We don't pretend that we'll end up with all the answers, but merely a sensible read on what's possible, how governments and companies are likely to respond across a range of scenarios, and what the USG and DoD should be prepared to undertake in response to Y2K's global unfolding. In short, while we're not interested in unduly hyping the Y2K situation, we are interested in exploring the "dark side" potentials because, frankly, that's what we get paid to do as a research organization that serves the U.S. military.
Could this be a "fake" site??? I'd really like to know.
I can't believe, even if only brainstorming for strategic purposes, that this would be in public domain. If it is a "fake" site, how'd they attach to the nwc.navy.mil site?
Thanks.
Cheryl
P.S. You can find link here too, at Center for Naval Warfare Studies, if you click on "Decision Support", and go to: Helping formulate U.S. Government (USG) responses to the global unfolding of the Y2K phenomenon. nwc.navy.mil
