Rande,

I've tried out a noise reduction module in the home studio recently. After a long while, I feel I can vouch for it.

I got it through Sam Adams Music (no relation to the brewer & patriot) for about $200, which is about as low as the price gets. It uses something called "parity check noise attenuation".

Because it has a very low impedance, it is able to launch into overdrive on the slightest boost. Mine is a rackmount, and for the price, it delivers great gain into the record banks.

I think it'll be a very popular unit. Let me know what you think if you get a chance to look into it. I can send you the specs if you like.
