"First Albany Ties Cabletron Stock Strength to Takeover Rumors"

Tuesday May 18, 1999 (3:43 pm ET)

NEW YORK, May 18 (Standard & Poor's) - First Albany attributes strength
in shares of Cabletron Systems (CS) to takeover speculation.

Analyst Matthew Barzowskas told S&P MarketScope he has not seen any
fundamental information that would move the stock significantly. He notes
that the company is in a consolidating industry, adding that CS recently
said it would not be adverse to selling part of the company for the right
price.

Barzowskas says there continue to be some firms looking to buy data
network companies, but points out that there aren't many left; he thinks
CS, 3Com, and Newbridge are probably the final three candidates with
product portfolios that somebody might want.

The First Albany analyst rates CS shares neutral; fundamentally, he thinks
the company still has some issues. He sees EPS of $0.02 for Q1 and
$0.30 for fiscal 2000 (Feb.).
