LOuisiana has a different soil, I would guess, and certainly a different humidity. Wait- I have a Texas Gardening book...let's see what Neil Sperry says: "Adapted to eastern third of the state. Other areas must have extensive soil preparation of pure Canadian peat moss. Must have acid soil. Prefers afternoon shade. Prime candidate for iron deficiency. Alkaline municipal water used repeatedly overrides gardener's good intentions." Because of the heavy watering needed in Dallas during our dry summers and the horrible heat and lack of trees, the newer landscapes probably avoid them and that's why we don;'t see them out here.
