what were the problems, out of curiosity? Having read a magazine excerpt elsewhere on the Web I know they have 24 hour FREE tech support for their products, whether purchased directly from them by a telco or perhaps an ISP, or though a VAR or Merisel or another national distributor.

The point made there was in response to a customer of another mfr. (maybe CSCO if I recall correctly) who had purchased the competitor's product through a distributor and had a problem the dist. wasn't qualified to handle. He then called the mfr.'s tech support and got the information he needed to resolve the problem but then received an e-mail or phone call telling him that was his one and only gratis support call, that'd he'd have spend some hundreds of dollars to subscribe to support thereafter OR his distributor would have to resolve the problem. Since the dist. couldn't help because the technical nature of the problem exceeded their capabilities the purchaser was extremely frustrated by the response he got.

With the favorable PR now out of the way, do you know which product(s) were involved with this "trouble" you've heard about? Were the problems resolved to the users' satisfaction? Without specifics no one can assess this question very effectively and we'd have to simply call it a rumor, perhaps put out by a competitor who's hurt by ASND's dominance.
