. NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Shares of Cabletron Systems Inc. (CS) rose nearly 9% Tuesday on the perception that the company's local area network business is improving, an analyst said.

"They are seeing continued growth and improvement in their LAN switching business," said Andy Schopick of Nutmeg Securities. "Their new products in the LAN switching area are continuing to receive good industry acceptance."

That bodes well for Cabletron, which has struggled recently because of a slowdown in the enterprise market, from which the company derives much of its revenue. During the early 1990s, this market grew as a dizzying pace as businesses rushed to connect their computers in a network for the first time. Now, however, most U.S. businesses have already networked their computers and most enterprise business comes from upgrades rather than from the more lucrative initial networking.

The company has also been the subject of steady stream of takeover rumors. A slew of takeovers in the industry has left Cabletron as one of few large publicly traded networking companies, and industry analysts say it would be attractive to a number of telecommunications companies looking to bulk up their capacity to handle data traffic.

Cabletron officials were not available for comment.

The company has also aroused the interest of some high-profile investors. In a Monday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Soros Fund Management LLC said it holds 4.8 million shares in the company. As of Feb. 28, the company had about 172 million common shares outstanding.

Cabletron shares were recently up 1, or 8.9%, at 12 3/8 on volume of 3.2 million. Average daily volume is 1.7 million.
