Texas Bookmakers Beat Federal Government

The federal government gambled that it could take down what it described as a multimillion-dollar offshore bookmaking operation with roots in Texas. James Truesdale and Ronald Hamilton operated a telephone tout service that provided gambling odds and other sports information for a fee. They also gave interested gamblers the toll-free phone numbers to Richard E. Jones's offshore bookmaking businesses-- Spectrum SA and World Sportsbook--in return for half of the profits. On appeal, the bookies won. ''We find the government's arguments unpersuasive,'' write Judges Will Garwood, Edith Jones and Jacques Wiener of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans. ''The government produced no evidence that anyone in the organization accepted bets in Texas."
