There are several companies that compete in offering "server farms". A meeting I went to a few months ago was hosted by one of these companies. They explained the advantages of housing a site on either their servers for a leased rate or co-hosting servers at their 24x7 redundant server facilities. One advantage these "specialist" companies can offer, which can be very important to ecommerce, the banking and investment industries, is the ability to mirror sites at different centers. This company had sites in NY and L.A. and planned to open others strategically around the world. If a earthquake struck L.A. or power went out in N.Y., the companies using these services would still be in business.
