this DARPA contract, for 360 degree vision, would be a wonderful response to the limited vision provided by Kaiser Electronics' system for the AIM-9X Sidewinder under the Joint Helmet Mounted Cueing System mentioned in the Microvision Pages site under competitive products.

That system allows the pilot to see enemy planes off to the side and perhaps above and below, so that the heat-seeking Sidewinder can be directed to go in the appropriate angle once launched. Imagine being able to cover 360 degrees instead with "our" system, as the ultimate blind side is from the rear.

Now the only hitch to be concerned about is that the "heat" coming from our aircraft's own thrust doesn't cause the missile to run up our own a**es as it goes for an enemy behind us.
