Some news on American Biometric's Biomouse/Smart Card reader, from the Ottawa Sun of May 18:

"'You put the card in the bioMouse, and then you stick your thumb into the scanner part to read your PIN (your fingerprint) and you're in," senior systems analyst Paul Reid said.'

. . .

"If the card is taken out of the device, the computer freezes. If the print doesn't match, ditto. If the bioMouse is disconnected, ditto. Ten thousand units were made, and quickly sold -- at least, the first 3,000 did.

"'It didn't move much after that,' Reid said. 'But the leftovers are now being retrofitted to be reintroduced to the market. We can now mass-produce and put out a product that works.'

==================

American Biometric Company, now up to 25 employees, is part of a larger Canadian company, DEW Engineering and Development Ltd. They have an alliance with Entrust, Verisign's competitor. It sounds like their first model would have sold more had it worked. My notes indicate that it was priced at $249.
