alohal...under promise and overdeliver...
same tactic that gates and grove have used for years....only problem is (here comes that word again), "perception"....if msd under promised, the market "perceived" his promise and delivery different than he, as in they lack "trust" in dell......let's put things in proper perspective, i'm very bullish about dell, but they are not ibm......gerstner didn't promise the moon, he just exuded that which "big blue" always was a bit conservative to "brag" about...he took advantage of the moment, read the market dynamic, and concentrated on hitting the home run out of the ball park of perception...trust is not an issue, trust is internal to a business operations...but many an honest man has suffered from his beliefs and trust...sort of as in religion....again we are in a media driven world, you see it in world events, including diplomacy...
consider this logic...dell is in a class with ibm,hwp,cpq,gtw...out of the "like kinds", dell is considered a pc company, gtw which is pure pc is regarded as dell was over the last two years, their turn will come,(but yet dell is "perceived" as pure pc,with sub 1k concerns voiced ad infinitum) that leaves the hybrids, ibm, cpq, hwp, who are where dell wants to be...for the interim cpq not a consideration, but could ultimately be the most damaging to dell...ibm and hwp seasoned, run by "old school" slice and dice, reduce work force, anything for the bottom line types..trust, vision, culture, just words to them...but they speak and the market listens...you can't survive in a vacuum, especially if you have the slightest inclination toward expansion through m&a...you need the bankers and street on your side.. NOTHING WRONG WITH DELL, GREAT FINANCIALS, I HAVE NO INTENTION OF SELLING.....just commenting that if something is not "perceived" as working...........then you are placed in a less than envious position of constantly trying to prove oneself....a bit like lack of "trust"...the very thing that msd has grown his company with is that which the market does not have in his/dell forward "vision" |
