Look Communications is offering TV viewers an alternative to both cable and conventional satellite TV
Look Communications Inc. may appear to be an upstart in the business of delivering television signals to consumers, with the strange notion of bouncing satellite TV signals off Toronto's CN Tower.

But there are deep pockets behind the Milton, Ont.-based firm the offers direct-to-home alternative to cable.

The partners behind Look include telecom giant Telesystem Ltd., printing powerhouse GTC Transcontinental, national broadcaster CTV Inc., and C.I. Covington, an Ontario labour-sponsored fund.

This week, Look and its backers pulled off a merger with I.D. Internet Direct Ltd., Canada's largest Internet service provider not aligned with a cable or telephone company. The merger will give Look a stock exchange listing, and immediate access to about half Vancouver-based Internet Direct's 127,000 subscribers to whom they can market their television service.

It will also bolster Look's fledgling Internet service to compete with
conventional cable companies, which are stepping up efforts to sell
the high-quality digital TV signals Look offers. ~snip~
