john...perhaps i was not clear..
the use of dell as in same class as ibm...was in reference to a market segment...if you read my full discourse, you will see where i clearly state ibm is where dell wants to be, and dell ain't no big blue...i'm purely trying to differentiate the tiers of players and the perceptions of same...dell not an ibm, hwp,or cpq, but more than a gtw or aapl...it is in a transition period, a period when the so called "vision" of dell has to be explained to the masses who could care less about "culture".....gerstner and platt came out swinging..defined who they are, and where they are going...dell will never catch the total ibm, without some major changes, one thing to be the best in what you do, but another to attempt to be the best that someone else has been doing for years...ibm has conceded for the most part the pc and storage business, perhaps forward the server business, but hey, why not focus on the profitable segments....it's a fine line between success and failure, and that line is balanced by the morale of the work force, if you can eliminate jobs/business groups and keep the remaining happy then you win...... |
