Matt, you are master of your own trading fate. Market makers can and do take advantage of unsuspecting investors. I'm still not using level II and I recognize a lot of what is going on despite that fact. Winning the "Wire to Wire" competition is particularly challenging because it strips away the opportunity for a daytrader to simply make money off of momentum, or a gap up, over the previous day's close.

Sure you can call your sell point but you can't win the competition unless your stock closes at a higher percentage gain than at the end of the day than all others in the contest. Obviously that does not mean you cannot take a profit along the way. Besides we are all winners just for competing.
