<If the K7 can really run at 600-800Mhz with 0.18 then they should go for it.>
Actually the K7 at 0.25 can run at 600 MHz, so there's no question that it'll hit at least 800 on the 0.18 process. The fact that at 0.25 it can run at 1000 MHz if supercooled (Kryotech demo) means that the limiting factor is not the switching speed but power dissipation. Lets compare the Vcc (voltage) and power specifications of the K7 at 550 MHz with the Pentium III at 550 MHz and reopen this discussion when the specs are released.

As far as getting access to Socket 370 and Socket 1, AMD would do better to buy SIII since I believe Intel had to give them "the store" to settle litigation. Its no secret that, since acquiring the Intel patents, S3 has wasted no time in competing directly with Chipzilla in the integrated graphics chipset market. See "S3 and VIA Form Strategic Partnership for Developing Integrated Graphics/Core Logic Chip Sets" at biz.yahoo.com. S3's market cap is 402M, but that includes 120M of cash.
