To add a new wrinkle - supercheap computers may not necessarily be good news for MSFT. Remember if Dell etc. has to give away computers, they want to make them as cheap as possible, which would include saving on software. Here's an article on the headway Linux is making in cheap computers: news.com Granted, the focus is on servers, but it may be in box-makers interest to foster the growth of Linux, simply because down the road it would save them $.
