The folly was allowing ideology to obscure perception; it is a very old one. Its results appeared to varying degrees in many places.

Have you read Barbara Tuchman's excellent book The March of Folly? Very much worth the time it takes, as any of her books are. Sand Against the Wind, her account of US - China relations from the early 20th Century to the close of WWII, should also be required reading.
