Magnetic surveys only work if the pipes have a different magnetic signature than their surrounding host substrate. If the pipes are buried in their own spew, they will not look any different than their surroundings. This is true in many areas of the world. It is also true, in many areas of the world, that the pipes are buried under a lot of overburden.

All is not lost though. You can follow a indicator mineral trail to the source. The closer to the pipe (the source) you get, the higher the concentration of indicator minerals should be. Drilling will be required, and the cores submitted for indicator mineral analysis. A long and tedious process,...but Fipke took a long time to find Ekati too.
