John...
You may want to reconsider your 'pass'. If you are a member at ipopros.com you will see they rank APLN in the upper 10 to 15% of IPO offerings with a "Hot" and "+3" rating. Strong revenue growth, solid underwriters (H&Q). They currently have what appears to be several hundred pipeline ipo's evaluated. I don't know if I will be participating or not, but thought I would pass the information along.
( ipopros.com )

ipopros.com ratings are as follows:
( ipopros.com )
HOT! -- The HOT! flag is applied to those deals where we expect an opening premium of at least 1.00. Note that the HOT! flag may be applied to a deal that is not yet rated in our system but carries an
"EARLY-POS" rating. In these cases we usually have a pretty strong feeling about a given deal right from the start.

AVOID -- We will put an AVOID rating on a deal for several reasons: it may be based on the underwriter's reputation or past history, or on information that we uncover during our workup on a company. Usually this means that our work has shown the deal to be poorly written, or not quite ready for the public markets. Whatever our reasons you can be certain that this rating is used judiciously and never out of spite for a company or an underwriter. Remember, we're here to help you avoid losses and pain.

FLAT -- The FLAT rating is applied to those deals we feel are lacking the demand or the sizzle it takes to move a deal above the issue price in trading immediately following it's launch. We consider FLAT to be a worse case scenario. In other words, we feel you can take a deal with a FLAT rating and assume only the minimum of market risk.

FLAT:SMALL -- The FLAT:SMALL rating indicates our expectation that a deal will trade to a zero premium up to a 1/4 or 3/8 premium bid.

SMALL PREM -- This is given to deals where we expect a premium of no more than 1/2 point.

SMALL:1.00 -- This rating indicates our expectation that a deal will produce a 1/2 point to 1 point premium bid.

1.00+ -- This rating is given to deals where we expect a premium of at least 1.00, and possibly higher.

2.00+ -- This rating is given to deals where we expect a premium of at least 2.00, and possibly higher.

3.00+ -- This rating is given to deals where we expect a premium of at least 3.00, and possibly higher.

5.00 or more -- This is our highest rating, and possibly our most troubling. It is not uncommon for deals with this rating to trade to premiums significantly higher than 5.00 over the issue price. However, nobody can predict with reasonable certainty exactly how high these stocks can shoot on the first day of trading. Suffice it to say that ANY deal with this rating should be at the top of your buy list. Please do not come back to us crying when a deal we called up 5.00 or more is up 25.00 or more, and complaining that you would have put in for more stock if you had been made aware. If we say 5.00 or more we feel that you should be involved in the stock.
