<Linux today is far better than UNIX was back then. But www.zd.net has reviewed Linux and called it "mediocre" compared to the abundant alternatives. IMHO, the only people who will ever make a buck on Linux will be the guys with pre-IPO shares in Red Hat. To attribute the supposed benefits of Linux as the salvation of AMD (or anyone else) is to ignore history and to create a destiny of repeated mistakes.>

The appeal of Linux is that it provides a real alternative to Windows NT when it comes to certain specialties, like Web servers. Plus you can't beat its value when it comes to a real UNIX OS.

The problem with Linux kind of touches upon what you said. Right now, people are hyping Linux as the replacement for Windows. But unless I see more than just dreams and hype, Linux will always remain a niche product, in my opinion.

You know what's weird? I have Red Hat Linux installed on my home PC in a dual-boot configuration with Win98. And I'm still trying to find a good reason for me to use Linux. Without one, I don't really feel all that motivated to dink around with it, especially as games like X-Wing Alliance continues to beckon me back to the buggy Win98.
