Also, if you were a young Makah living up at Neah Bay, where mainly the only thing to do is watch it rain most of the time, you might enjoy chasing down a whale, then trying to eat it--frankly, I'd rather have a nice sirloin instead of clam-flavored buffallo, but to each his own.
I'm not too sure that the canoe was towed out to the killing site, I had heard that the rowers were strong young fellows, and could pretty much power around on their own.
I was starting to get kinda angry when I heard that the whale was killed--then I saw the evening newspaper with a picture of some Seattleites doing the candlight vigil thing--really weak man! All the feelings I had against the Makah just drained out of me when I saw the photo of these emotionally wrought nut cases.
The whales will have their planet back someday, don't think for a second that humans will still be here 10,000 years from now! No need to cry for the whales!
Enjoyed the D.H. Lawrence. Best to read him when you're young, with hormones raging, but a nice selection there.
