SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 1999--Identix Inc.
(AMEX: IDX.A) Thursday announced that the Chicago O'Hare Universal Air
Cargo Access Project was honored for the innovative integration of
advanced card and biometric identification technologies at the
CardTech/SecurTech '99 Gala Awards Banquet held last Thursday night.
The cutting-edge universal air cargo pilot was installed by
SecurCom utilizing Identix's biometric fingerprint identification
hardware, Oracles' databases and Schlumberger's smart cards. The
program has been operating for approximately a year and currently
involves 22 airlines and over 25 trucking companies.
The City of Chicago's Aviation Commissioner, Mary Rose Loney,
accepted the Larry Linden Innovative Security Technology Application
Award for the Chicago O'Hare International Airport's Universal Air
Cargo Security Access System. The system, as explained by Loney,
combines both smart cards and biometrics for use in authenticating
truck drivers via their fingerprints when they deliver cargo to the
airport. Concluding her acceptance speech, Commissioner Loney stated
proudly that if it works at O'Hare, it will work anywhere.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Identix Inc., Randy
Fowler, said, "It is a significant honor for Identix to be involved
with such a prestigious award. This was a great opportunity to bring
the field of biometrics into airport security and we are very pleased
of our relationship with the Chicago O'Hare airport. We look forward
to many future endeavors."
During one of the key conference sessions at CardTech/SecurTech
'99, Assistant Commissioner James E. Sachay from O'Hare airport,
presented details of the system, additional pilots underway, and a
documentary video about the award-winning program. In the tape,
Commissioner Loney added, regarding a door access pilot in the U.S.
Customs are at O'Hare, "So far, this test has shown that it is
superior to our current system and adds additional level of security
and the use of fingerprint technology is actually faster than our
current technology which incorporates a swipe card and a PIN number."
