CHANDLER, Ariz. -- SpeedFam-IPEC Inc. here announced today it is expanding its portfolio of
chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) technologies with the addition of a third planarization
platform.

The new technology is focused on the application of fixed-abrasive-pad technology in a web format.
SpeedFam-IPEC expects to make its prototype web format technology available by the end of the
third quarter of 1999.

Initial development work on the new equipment will employ fixed abrasive pads for slurry-free or
slurry-reduced CMP processes. "The addition of the web format to SpeedFam-IPEC's CMP product
line positions us as the only company to offer three distinct lines of CMP equipment," said Richard
Faubert, president and CEO of SpeedFam-IPEC.

SpeedFam-IPEC will be able to offer rotational, orbital and web architecture, which positions the
company as a potential single source supplier of CMP technology, he added.

"Our web technology development has been transferred to our advanced technology design center in
Portland, Ore., in order to focus their efforts on this emerging new technology," said Ralph D.
Hartung, SpeedFam-IPEC's chief operations officer and president of the CMP Group.
