BANGKOK (May 20, 1999 2:26 a.m. EDT nandotimes.com) - Thirty-seven percent of all men in Thailand, or about 3 million men, suffer from impotence, according to a study released on Thursday.
The study was made by the National Institute of Development Administration in conjunction with Pfizer Inc, the U.S. producer of the Viagra impotence drug, and the Erectile Dysfunction Advisory Council.
The top cause for erectile dysfunction among Thai men was smoking, followed by diabetes, heart disease and stress, the study said.
Some 1,250 men from eight Thai provinces and the capital Bangkok took part in the survey, which found that Thai men had sex on average about seven to nine times a month.
Impotence affected about 20 percent of Thai males aged between 40-49 years, 46 percent in the 50-59 year bracket and 73 percent in the 60-70 year category, the study said.
The findings contrast sharply with statistics released recently by the health ministry which said that only about 400,000 Thai men suffer from impotence.
The study said Thai men were shy about revealing sex problems to their doctors.
