Money funds in 401k? Bubble bursting? As usual, you have to go to the extreme! <sigh> The one-year quote was in jest, in response to your cheap shot that academicians never make any money. Hey, LTCM (e.g.) had sterling records till it went bust (but even Soros lost a bunch last year, no?) :-)

In all seriousness though, I think that the market is becoming more and more efficient with better inforation flow from the internet and index funds are destined to be the future stars. Your point regarding whether the S&P is a valid benchmark is well made and taken from the manager's POV, but not the 401k investor's POV IMO.
