Apple's Retail Unit Sales More Than Double In April Thursday, May 20, 1999 By Victor Rhee <vrhee@macchat.com>
Apple held the third largest share and showed the largest growth in the retail market during April, according to a report from PC Data.
PC Data reported that unit sales more than doubled for Apple from the year ago period, much greater than the 21% growth shown in the overall PC sector.
Apple took third in retail share, behind #2 Hewlett-Packard and #1 Compaq.
While average price declined for both Hewlett-Packard and Compaq, the average price rose from $1,306 in March to $1,369 in April.
Stephen Baker of PC Data said most growth was seen in the sub-$1,000 PC market as these computers made up 71% of all retail sales. Despite this, Apple's unit sales more than doubled as the iMac retails for $1,199 while the PowerMac's retail for more.
Meanwhile, Intel's Pentium III chip failed to make major inroads, accounting for only 7.8 percent of units sold.
