Aloha,

I think we're in agreement. I was saying that the priority had to be on being the parent/teacher (since no one else was really going to do it as well), not that that's all you could be. As our children age (again, I have very young ones) and our ability to affect their ethics and behaviors diminishes, then the priority can shift back to being a friend. I have friends with grown children who have expressed that sentiment exactly -- now that the pressure's off, it's nice just to be a friend. But I believe that that transition should occur only after they reach a responsible age. I think anyone who's trying to be primarily a buddy to a pre-teen (or an irresponsible teenager) has their priorities backwards.
