Since their pre-ipo days, nVidia has been maintaining "buy 3dfx for games. And buy us for everything else". The thing is, that I actually agree with 3dfx's opinion that most home PCs are just entertainment centers and as such game performance is very important. The danger in 3dfx's marketing campaign is that you don't want to be associated with only games to the exclusion of everything else. In other words, you don't want to imply that you don't need 3dfx if you are not a serious gamer. As an example, a friend of mine wants to buy a PC so that among other things, he can upgrade his computer skills. I suggested that he'd buy a V3 card. He called me back a couple of weeks later and said that everyone he talked to has tried to talk him out of it because they say that 3dfx is just for games. This is a serious danger facing 3dfx's marketing. You cannot be everything to everyone, but you do not want to be too narrowly associated either.
