Hello Douglas, Thank you for the article. There are no winners in Kosovo! US, EC,NATO, Russia and Serbs are all have lost. The Kosovars have lost in big way. The have become pawns in a Great Game between Russia and the US, what Russians call "Bolshoi Igra!"
For all the help Russians have received in the past ten years, they have now showed their true intentions, not the one of a friend, but one of a hostile ex-super power that wants to be a player on the chessboard of the world politics and not a by-stander. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, US and the West didn't really know what to think of Russia!!
Russians have been black-mailing the West since early 1990's. It is always one thing or another. If IMF down't give them "free money," "the nuclear weapons will fall into the worng hands," "Russia will disintegarte!" "Communists will win the election!," "Russia will re-arm!," etc, etc, etc! For 70 years world shaked at the thought of Soviet Victory, and now they make us shake what happens if they fall apart!
Our leaders should adopt a different approach to Russia. First and foremsot, we must take of the velvet glove and put on something harder. They want to be a world leader, we should let them be! gg In the meanwhile, they should sink or float, but don't ask the West for money, or assistance! We must cut-off all the aids. Russia is not a friend, of the West.
If it wasn't becaue of Russians, Milosovic would have agreed to settlement soon after the bombing, or even before it all started. Russians have the stroke with the Serbs to convince them to let the Multi-national force move in Kosovo. Palying the big Slav brother, Russians let Serbs believe that if they hunker-down and take it, the Serbs can get more favorable terms. and that Russians will negotaite those terms. Well, Russians are negotiating terms so they can get favors for themselves!
Serb have now see through this game! Yesterday, Arkan, one of the Serbian Vice Presidents, accused Cernomyerdin of playing a double game! Serbs, knowing that the Russians are not coming, may accept some sort of settlement by the end of May.
Regards,
yaacov
