<<Amazon's book sales have been profitable >> Not exactly . . . Covey told analysts at the conference call for the 4th qtr of last year that Amazon made money on the book business but she more recently said that they were marginally unprofitable on the BB this past quarter. When an analyst queried further, Covey said that Amazon saw nice margins on books during the Christmas season and that costs were spread over the jump in business. During the past quarter, book margins lowered a bit but were made up for by other products that have a bit higher margin.

Amazon has great sales - who wouldn't if they gave their associates 10%-15% of sales and customers $5 of stuff for $4?
