Here's more info on the USRX cable modem situation. The following post was made last night to the USRX message board:

The cable project has been known for some time. Basically USRX has won the right to develop a proposal for a "industry standard" cable modem that could be used with all/many cable systems throughout the country. The background on this is that 80% of the cable companies in this country are not really wired for full duplex cable modem operation, the capital cost of doing so is very high, perhaps $1,500 to $2,000 per house passed, additionally
the cable companies are for the most part out of cash and would rather not put up $300-$400 each for cable modems that could very rapidly become obsolete. The USRX solution is to sell a standardized cable modem direct to the consumers from retail distribution (Bets Buy etc) probably in the $200 range, that would work will all/most cable systems. You would just sign up for the service with your local cable company in the same way that you do
with AOL. The cable modems are a hybrid design, you would receive signal from the cable company over the cable at around 800K or 1 Meg a second and upload over your regular phoneline at around 33.6K. USRX will make both the central site Total Control Head-End Equipment which it will sell to the cable operators and the remote consumer modems which will be sold through the current distribution channels. The fact that cable companies seem to
have a really hard time even keeping "I Love Lucy" in focus and at a constant volume level, makes me wonder if they are up to the cable-modem challenge, but if they decide they are USRX is almost ready with the hardware.

Just thought I would contribute some info to this discussion after the long winded questions in my last post. I can't vouch for its accuracy, but have followed the USRX board for a few weeks, and "DaleVelk" seems pretty knowledgeable about USRX.
