JBC Someone posted this to you on RB so I just copied it here for them. >>OT-To the O-ring guy on SI. The redesign of the O-ring joint on the space shuttle was a no brainer. Originally, they only had one o-ring sealing the joint with no backup. They added a backup and decided not to launch below a certain temp. If the guy who ordered the launch paid attention to the engineers who said that the o-rings would lose their effectiveness at that temp, there was an improved chance the thing would not have blown up. Now try to get a new medical device into the market-that is time consuming. The minimum test period for an implantable is 18 months, and that is if it is similar to another device.
