So... you are as smart as most of us. I think the word is diversification. I understand Oil(s), i do NOT understand most of the tech COMPANIES. I might understand their PRODUCT, but not necessarily the business side of the company. THAT, i believe, is what WEB is saying. He sees a tech company and asks 'where will this company be in 10+ years, and what will their growth be in that time frame ?', and i ask myself the same thing. How many Tech companies have come and gone, in the last 2-3 years even ? One comes out with a 'leading edge' product - one that gets rave reviews - the best of the best - UNTIL another company sees what said company did and improves on it.
Can anyone explain the Iomega, Syquest debacle ? Would anyone care to tell me with any amount of certainty where any 10 tech companies will be in 3 years ? this also means I.S. Consultancy companies such as Modis, Bob Half, Anacom, etc.
I think the only companies that are close to being a 'sure thing' are IBM, INTC, then EMC and MSFT (depending on what the Gov't can and will make them do, such as split up, which they did to AT&T in 1984, and force them to open up proprietary information like they forced IBM to in, 1973 was it ?
Look at Compaq - fallen on their ass. They are not the first, and certainly won't be the last.
I have no idea who will be the 'hot' video card maker, or hard drive maker even 6 months from now. Maybe it comes from sales margins ?
a year ago Western Digital was tops, now it's Maxtor, and it seems you can flip a coin on video cards.
At one time Hayes was the ONLY company to make modems, now they are all but gone. what happened ??
AMD sells more chips than INTC, but you'd NEVER know it in their stock price. WHY ? they have had to lower profit margin so much in order to compete with INTC that its' killing them. They may be number one in number of units sold, but not in revenues...
AOL 'should' be around forever, but a lot of people i know are going to ATHM in droves (cable modem service). Where does that leave Prodigy, Compuserve, etc. ??
Yes, by all means, diversify. i do.
