Kuwait was never Iraqi territory, for the simple reason that when it was a part of the province of Iraq, they both were part of the Ottoman Empire. Anyway, that was in the 18th century. It had been a British protectorate or independent for quite some time...I don't know about the drilling, but if it were so, there are other methods of recourse than occupation...I didn't know that bucking OPEC was a good reason for war...Whether or not we gave "two hoots" about Kuwait, we didn't want Saddam to take the rest of the Arabian Peninsula, and thus control about a quarter of proven oil reserves. We also wanted to get rid of his facilities for the production of weapons of mass destruction. Boy, are we evil!
