If you take the time to read the history, you will discover - no surprise, really - that when Anglo-Persian was reorganized after the coup, a US consortium was given a 40% interest in the company.

Reflexive identification with the British, a leftover from WWII that served us badly in relations with the ex-colonies (you do remember, of course, the British insistence on shipping French troops to Vietnam after WWII), was also a major factor.
