SoundView Technology Group analyst Gary Helmig said the outlook
for IBM CORP's 2Q results was very strong and he could boost
earnings estimates. The outlook is for a very strong 2Q," Helmig
said. He said changes to earnings estimates were "in process" and
declined to comment on specific figures. Helmig's previous
estimate for IBM's current quarter ending in June was for diluted
EPS of $1.74 per share, a penny per share below the current Wall
Street consensus estimate for the 2Q. He cautioned that the second
half "was still an issue," referring to concerns that corporate
spending on new computer products may slow as companies focus on
fixing possible Year 2000 glitches in existing equipment. (Reuters
