I guess my point is that methadone in useful doses is even more intoxicating to a lot of people than morphine. Morphine has a "cleaner" effect. Methadone is politically favored because it ain't morphine, which is practically heroin and thus a sin. There's a puritanical thing at work here. Methadone lasts long. It works in pill or liquid form. It holds withdrawal at bay. But for all that it's not fun. Methadone intoxication is "dirtier" than that from many other narcotics.
If I ever had real need for it, I would opt for morphine. The next rung down holds hydromorphone (Dilaudid) and levorphanol (Dromoran). Demerol is a whole step down from there. It's so prevalent because it's cheap and easy to manufacture.
