The problem seems to be that we have events in front of us which are perceived by our ex-enemies and our present enemies as evidence of almost imperialist intention on our part - the expansion of Nato being the most obvious, compounded by Nato's new role as an offensive force for 'moral good' - ignoring international law and national sovereignty. It's a bad precedent, and would make it impossible for us to take the high ground in any future invasion of Afghanistan for example.
