Like transcontinental railroads of the last century, the build-out of the world-wide broadband data infrastructure represents a historic investment opportunity. Unfortunately, the undertaking is often cloaked in technical nomenclature and marketing rhetoric. As the data communications and telecommunications worlds converge, the marketing dissonance is likely to increase, not decrease. This report seeks to cut through the 'network cloud' and identify some of trends which profit component companies. In particular, we see Applied Micro Circuits, PMC-Sierra, and Vitesse as beneficiaries of the boom in chips for ATM, SONET/SDH and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing equipment
