SEMICONDUCTORS. Given the general weakness of the sector over the past year, only the most dominant public companies, like Intel, and the most innovative, like Broadcom, have been able to distinguish themselves. Others represent rapidly developing or key infrastructural niches of the industry, like semiconductor-manufacturing equipment and embedded microprocessors.
CONSUMER COMPUTING. As chip sizes and prices fall, the PC's dominance will be threatened by smart, networked devices. You can see it on the streets with personal digital assistants that support email and cell phones that receive news.
COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT. Companies like Avici Systems, Juniper Networks, Sycamore, and Nexabit Networks -- all of which are building high-speed switching and routing technologies designed for big, powerful networks -- will find their products in great demand as large vendors compete to offer the communications service companies the tools for high-bandwidth voice-and-data networks. These companies are becoming attractive acquisition candidates as the sector consolidates around Cisco Systems and Lucent Technologies.

Nexabit claims that its about-to-be-released switch routers run 10 to 100 times faster than current technologies -- up to 6.4 terabits per second -- and are as reliable and intelligent as routers. If the products perform as billed, they will likely become a cornerstone of the Universal Network. |
