Hi Larry - thanks for a very heartwarming post. While the desire for a better educated next generation is legendary for the asian stereotype [not a bad desire, I should quickly add] I do not want to sell the *local* talents short. Also, even though this melting pot has a tendency to boil over now and then, it is still a unique phenomenon in progress [or should we say, "the best of all possible worlds"]
I certainly hope there is a return to the concert halls and the like. While the cyberworld is a marvel of contemporary society, I wonder how much of it contributes to the school shooting scenes in Colorado and Georgia [incidentally, while these cases of tragedy of contemporary suburbia are certainly heart wrenching, people tend not to decry inner city violence as much! But I digress] Musical performance can be such a wonderful social binding and sublimating event in face of cyber alienation [the late Prof Lewis Mumford could have a field day chronicling the current affairs in "The Human Condition <?>"]
Back to asian classical musicians, even that is an ever shifting farcade. While people may conjure up Yo-yo Ma, Vanessa Mae is always lurking in the wing <VBG>
best, Bosco |
