Safe Needle Laws Make Progress

An SEIU effort to win state and national laws promoting the use of safe needles to protect health care workers from being infected with HIV, hepatitis, and other blood borne diseases, continues to gain momentum.

On April 13, Maryland Governor Parris Glendening signed a safe needle bill requiring the state to develop recommendations to protect health care workers from accidental needlesticks.

Later this week, a safe needle bill is expected to be introduced in the U.S. Congress with bipartisan support.

In recent weeks, safe needle laws have passed the Texas Senate and the New Jersey House and now await further action. Safe needle bills are currently pending in Arkansas, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan and New York.

SEIU members have already helped pass safe needle laws in California and Tennessee.
