I think that Amazon could make a narrow profit if they scaled back dramatically but that would spoil the ability to extract hundreds of millions from the sale of stock by insiders and financial participants. That could be the end game in five or ten years. By then it really won't matter to Bezos and others at Amazon and their venture partners. Insiders have already cleared out over $400 million in stock sales. Pretty nice for a company that is not certain to make a profit. Bezos should have over a billion tucked away before the question is more than academic.
